Potential and renewable evidence of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and recycled carbon fuels (RCF)

The aim of the project is to provide scientific advice to the Commission and in particular to the Directorate-General ENER on three different issues.

  1. Provision of detailed information on the potential of liquid and gaseous renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and recycled carbon fuels (RCF) in the EU from 2020 to 2050
  2. Development of a methodology that enables the producers or distributors of RFNBOs to demonstrate the use of renewable energies and thus enable them to be counted towards the minimum share of renewable energies of 14% for the year 2030 set out in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II)
  3. Development of a methodology for determining the amount of additional electricity that had to be produced in the respective member state to decarbonize the mobility-sector (element of additionality).

The project activities within the IIP relate to the processing of the first question, in which a range of possible production paths are investigated and described in detail in order to assess the potential of RFNBO and RCF. In particular, the technology readiness levels of the respective process chains including the individual technologies, energy and material balances as well as efficiencies are determined and should thus facilitate a comparability of the different process routes. An estimation of the quantity potential of renewable fuels (RFNBO) is also carried out within the framework of this project, in that predominantly different carbon sources are investigated as a feedstock.
