Construction Materials Stewardship

The CIB Working Commission W115 "Construction Materials Stewardship" was established in January 2007.

Our mission is to:

  • drastically reduce the deployment and consumption of new non-renewable construction materials, to replace non-renewable materials with renewable ones whenever possible, to achieve equilibrium in the demand and supply of renewable materials and ultimately to restore the renewable resource base, and

  • carry out these tasks in ways to maximize positive financial, social and environmental and ecological sustainability effects, impacts and outcomes.

Objectives

Against the background of the mission statement the Commission's Objectives are to develop methods, strategies and initiatives to promote:

  • Effective use of new and existing construction materials

  • Utilization of sustainable materials

  • Regeneration of the construction material resource base

  • Use of waste to make construction materials

  • Building, component and material reuse

  • Minimisation of construction waste

  • Deconstruction and design for deconstruction

  • Design and utilization of transformable and adaptable buildings

  • Renovation and adaptable reuse of existing buildings

  • Use of life cycle costing and management for CMS

  • Collection of evidence to support policy and regulatory development for CMS

Work Programme

For the very first period after the official establishment of this Commission its programme objective concern:

  • expanding the commission membership base

  • developing cooperative and synergetic working relationships with other CIB Task Groups and Working Commissions that are active in the area of Sustainable Building and Construction

  • developing and agreeing a set of detailed objectives and establishing a priority roadmap for achieving these objectives, taking into account work already covered by other CIB Task Groups and Working Commissions.

A first programme objective in support of this is to develop a Commission Database containing:

  • all accessible literature with accompanying literature reviews on (aspects of) Construction Materials Stewardship

  • information on relevant initiatives, interventions and programmes in member countries.

Co-ordination

Abdol Chini Director and Professor, Holland professor of Construction Management and Past Director of M.E. Rinker, Sr. School of Construction Management at the University of Florida, USA and Frank Schultmann, Professor Doctor and Chair of Business Administration, Production and Operations Managment of the Institute for Industrial Production at the Karlsruhe University of Technology, Germany were appointed as coordinateres for the working comission.

The two coordinators come from different but complimentary building disciplines, (engineering/construction, design/construction, management/economics), and come from different geographic locations on the planet (America and Europe). They will be able to offer different professional and regional perspectives and expertise. The coordinators consider that they will be able to share the workload and the work together in a very synergistic way to the benefit of all the members of the working commission and to the better achievement of the working commission’s mission statement and objectives.
