The aim of the project is to investigate the potential of vehicles with range extenders and to make statements regarding the required battery size, price and lifetime. A range extender is an integrated combustion engine (or a fuel cell) that supplies electricity to the battery when necessary, thus increasing the range. In order to determine the techno-economic requirements, existing mobility data of different European countries will be examined in order to filter out corresponding usage patterns. The task of the DFIU is to analyze the impact of the additional electricity demand caused by range extenders on the German generation mix, as well as on the distribution grid on a local level.
